Our Values

The UB 50th Anniversary commemorative digital archive and resource collection brings together various materials, including publications, artwork, interviews, speeches, language materials (both audio and transcriptions), photographs, and videos that have not previously existed in a shared space. The materials curated on this site are either already in the public domain or shared with permission. We do not intend to host any sacred or sensitive items that require closed cultural protocols on this site.

We also want to clarify that the HARK at UB does not aim to become another colonial repository for Haudenosaunee knowledge that would replace or undermine the critical importance of Indigenous-run repositories in our territories. A key objective of the HARK project is to provide support and engage in community outreach to address Indigenous repository’s interests, as well as to offer training, assistance, and research support to sustain the important archival work happening within Haudenosaunee territories.

In this effort, we strive to uphold values central to Haudenosaunee people, such as good-mindedness, gratitude, and helping others.

As we develop this resource, we acknowledge the valid concerns surrounding identity fraud and artificial intelligence. However it is essential that the production and sharing of Haudenosaunee knowledge continue, undeterred by those who seek to exploit it or the technology that enables such actions.

The values guiding this work are not fixed; they can be updated, revised, and changed over time to adapt to new circumstances and information.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
